Barnett BCX Buck Commander Extreme CRT Crossbow Review

Detailed Review

Crossbow Type

Quad Limb Compound – As with most mainstream crossbows the Barnett BCX uses a quad limb compound wheel system to get the most power possible out of the crossbow’s relatively small frame, but Barnett has added something extra with their custom laminated limbs that give the limbs excellent weather protection in addition to top notch strength and power transfer.

Barnett BCX Assembly

One of the most attractive things about the BCX is the ease and speed with which it can be put together and that’s compared to Barnett’s usual assemblies which are already very straightforward. This is a very important factor because it makes the crossbow much more accessible for beginning users and just generally removes a lot of the potential hassle that normally goes along with assembling a compound crossbow. All tools are included and full assembly can be achieved in around 20 minutes.

Barnett BCX Features

  • CRT (Carbon Riser Technology) – Barnett’s proprietary and well-proven CRT or carbon riser technology is integrated into the BCX, this system replaces the riser and other select parts of the crossbow that normally would be composed of aluminum, with a lightweight carbon compound that is just as strong as the alternatives.
  • CROSSWIRE String and Cable System – This string system utilizes Barnett’s custom string blend and unique cam design to provide a smooth and efficient release on every shot.
  • Aluminum Flight Track – A CNC aluminum flight track that allows for very smooth shots and because it is composed of aircraft grade aluminum it is very durable and will likely last the entire life of the BCX.
  • Cocking Device Attachment – The Barnett BCX includes a built in cocking device attachment which allows you to attach the included rope cocker or one of your choice for faster reloading in the field.
  • Rope Cocker – All Barnett BCX packages come with a Barnett brand rope cocking device which is a nice addition because the BCX is very difficult to load without some sort of aid.
  • 3 x 20” Barnett Outdoor Carbon bolts – The BCX package also includes 3 Barnett brand carbon bolts with field points, these are quality arrows made specifically for Barnett’s 20” bolt crossbows, they are hunt quality and need only a broadhead attached to be ready to bag some serious game.
  • 3x32mm Scope – This nice illuminated scope is a perfect complement to the BCX, it offers ideal magnification for the ranges that the crossbow excels at, and once it is dialed in the only thing you’ll have to worry about is robin hooding arrows (a legitimate concern, be careful!).
  • 3 Bolt Quiver – A standard 3 bolt quiver made of a durable composite material, it attaches to the underside of the crossbow and provides quick access to your bolts.

Performance Overview

One would expect a mid-priced crossbow to deliver mid-level performance, good but not too good, this isn’t the case with the Barnett BCX however because despite the price it is constantly compared to top level hunting crossbows even ones released much later, in addition to this it is generally considered much easier to handle than those crossbows. In the field the BCX’s light weight and relatively small size make it very easy to handle in cramped spaces which could make the difference between getting a shot and having to wait for another opportunity which could be a matter of hours.

When it comes to accuracy and power you’ll have no worries whatsoever as long as your scope is properly sighted in, the BCX hits hard, fast, and with pinpoint accuracy even out to very long ranges that most hunters will rarely take, and despite this kind of output it is relatively easy to reload due to the cocking device attachment and smooth cam system.

Overall the BCX is an excellently priced crossbow that will impress anyone from the beginner to the expert crossbowman, and is likely to be the perfect fit for a lot of hunters.

Customer Reviews

“This crossbow is very fast. After using a compound for 25 years, it will take some getting use to . It would be in your best interest to get a crossbow target made for crossbows. I shot the Block target at 20 yards. It blew through it like a piece of cardboard and into a round bale of hay and gone…(read more here: Barnett BCX Review)”

“This thing is awesome! It’s light compared to other crossbows, which is a reason I decided to spend a little more and purchase this one…(read more here: Barnett BCX Review)”

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Value – One of the biggest “bang for your buck” crossbows out there, the BCX delivers very high level performance at a mid-ranged price, in addition the BCX ships with several features and accessories that increase the value significantly.
  • Performance – The Barnett BCX is capable of generating very fast arrow speeds that rival and in some cases exceed those put out by crossbows which are valued at over $1000, this also extends to the crossbow’s accuracy which is spot on and very consistent.
  • Style – Decorated with a high definition camo finish and available in a couple of unique color options just like Barnett Quad 400, the BCX definitely has a sleek look that will certainly appeal to anyone looking for something a little different.

Cons:

Possible shipping issues – A few customers seem to have had troubles with loose parts in their BCX packages, these problems don’t seem to be major but it is something to be on the lookout for if you choose to purchase the BCX. Should you actually have a significant issue with the crossbow Barnett’s customer service is very good and you should be able to get the problem resolved quite quickly and likely for free.
